Abstract

This study updates information on the geographical distribution of ba kich species (Morinda officinalis How.) in the Central region of Vietnam, thereby connecting relevant information to determine the ecological characteristics of the species and other research priorities for the purpose of conservation and developmen of this species. In the Central region of Vietnam, the medicinal ba kich plant is distributed in hilly and low mountain areas in Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, and Quang Nam provinces. Climatic characteristics of regions that have its distribution: the average temperature is from 21 - 25oC; average humidity is  from 83 - 89%; The average annual rainfall is from 2,000 to 3,500 mm. The height distribution is concentrated from 100 to 750 meters above sea level; Common slopes are from 15 to 20 degrees. Morinda officinalis How. are distributed on yellow-red feralit soils from clay and metamorphic rocks (Fs) and yellow-red feralit soils from acidic igneous rocks (Fa) with average soil layer thickness. The vegetative is shrubland and poor to medium evergreen natural forest. The canopy cover is from 0.2 to 0.4. Most of the populations encountered during the investigation had a narrow spatial distribution, low individual density, and natural regeneration was not really optimistic. At present, the negative anthropogenic impact on the populations is not really widespread, mainly due to overexploitation. Based on those results, the study has also built a map of the species adaptation. This will be the foundation for future planning, investment of conservation models and development of precious medicinal plants under the forest canopy.
