Abstract

Ca oi is the local name of a tree species, naturally distributed in sandy areas in the province of Thua Thien Hue. It is a native tree species with a high potential for forest restoration in the local area, but there is a lack of basic information on this species. Thus, this study aims to provide information on morphological characteristics and the ability to preserve and propagate from the seeds. The results showed the morphological characteristics and defined the scientific name Castanopsis chinensis. The fruits of this plant ripen between September and October every year. The physical quality of the seeds had an average weight of a seed 3.06 ± 0.01 g, water content of seeds 64.82 ± 0.46%, and seed purity of 88.05 ± 1.42 %. Seeds were sown after harvesting, with the earliest germination time on the 38th day and at the end of the 120th day, the germination rate reached 77.78 ± 4.28%. The method of preserving seeds in the sand, with a period of 15 days, gave the best germination rate (67.78 ± 5.09%). With the ratio of 90% alluvial soil: 10% manure and no shadow (0%), after 6 months the seedlings reached a height and crown diameter of 14 cm and 2,1 mm, respectively, around 8 leaves.
